How to read ratings

The same number doesn't mean the same thing on every site. Only Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic have official thresholds; the rest are an editorial guide.

Methodology

  • The ranking of services in each country is an editorial estimate (last reviewed 25 Oct 2026), checked every month against Chrome UX Report traffic data (Sep 2026). The “Top 1K” next to a site means it is among the 1,000 most visited sites in that country in Chrome. It measures the web only — apps are not counted — and sites inside a larger portal (BBC iPlayer, Naver) cannot be measured on their own. Where available, sources backing individual claims are listed with the country and the service.
  • Who leads = the first service on a country's list that is not streaming. “Domestic” means the service comes from that country; “regional” means it comes from a neighbouring country or the same language area (e.g. FilmAffinity in Latin America, Kinopoisk in Kazakhstan).
  • Film production shows only countries with a verified number (15 of 83). Countries count differently (produced, released in cinemas) and in different years, so the map compares orders of magnitude; the definition and source are listed with each country.
  • Local or global compares, by Chrome traffic rank, the most visited domestic film site (ratings, criticism, databases) with the most visited foreign one. Ranks come in steps (top 1,000, 5,000, 10,000…), so “as big as” means the same step. Streaming, where-to-watch sites and general forums are left out.
  • Domestic services counts the index's services from each country — a measure of the index's coverage, not of market size.
  • Links are checked automatically once a week; the first check has not been recorded yet.
  • Global streamers (Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Max) are left out because they are the same everywhere.
  • Informal channels — Telegram channels, hand-to-hand copies, YouTube uploads — are described but not linked. Everywhere, a growing share of recommendations also comes from TikTok and YouTube critics, which this index does not try to rank.
