Story · Rating scales

A 7 is not a 7.

The world scores films on different scales, and the scales count different things. One site tells you how many critics liked a film, another averages what its users felt, a third keeps press and public apart. Before comparing a Japanese score with an American one, it helps to know what each number is.

01 / Two different questions

How many liked it, or how much?

Rotten Tomatoes

Share of positive reviews — not how good a film is, but how many critics agreed it was fine.

  • 60% Fresh
  • 75% Certified Fresh (with a minimum number of reviews)

A film everyone rates 3/5 can score 100%.

02 / Press and public

Two scores on one page

Two separate scores: press (AlloCiné converts reviews from about 55 outlets to its own 5-star scale, shown from three reviews) and audience (users' 1–5 stars). source

03 / Different scales

Averages of what users feel

Most sites average their users' ratings — but out of 5, out of 10 or as a percentage, so the same number means something different from site to site.

04 / How we read them

When is a score good?

Outside Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic there are no official thresholds. These are our editorial reading — a guide, not a rule.

About this story

  • The map colours each country by the scale of the first rating site on its CineMundi list that we document (14 sites so far).
  • What each number measures is sourced where a source exists; the thresholds in section 04 are editorial, except Rotten Tomatoes' and Metacritic's own.
  • The story is about the sites, not about any film.
