43 of 83 countries choose their films on foreign sites.

Where do people go to decide what to watch? We measured the most visited domestic film site in every country against the most visited foreign one. In 52% of the countries we cover, no domestic ratings, criticism or film database site makes the top million — the conversation about films happens on someone else's platform.

01 / Holding their ground

A home-grown site as big as the global ones (31)

In these countries the most visited domestic film site is in the same traffic tier as IMDb or Letterboxd. Recommendations come in the local language, from local users and critics.

02 / Outgrown

A local site exists, but foreign ones are bigger (9)

There is a domestic film site with a real audience, yet a foreign one is visited at least a tier more.

03 / Borrowed

No domestic film site in the top million (43)

Here no domestic ratings, criticism or database site reaches the country's million most visited sites. People choose films on foreign sites — mostly IMDb, sometimes a neighbour's (Kinopoisk in Belarus and Kazakhstan).

How this was measured

  • Traffic comes from the Chrome UX Report top lists (Sep 2026): for each country, the sites Chrome users visit, in tiers — top 1,000, 5,000, 10,000 and so on up to a million. Same tier counts as “as big as”.
  • Only film sites count: ratings, criticism, lists and databases. Streaming services, where-to-watch guides and general forums are left out.
  • It measures the web in Chrome, not apps — countries where films are discussed mostly in apps or on social media look more “borrowed” than they are.
  • “Domestic” means a site from that country in the CineMundi index. A site we don't list can't be counted — if you know one, that is exactly the correction we want.
